Expandable self defense batons are primarily used to create an effective way of striking someone from a distance. It is important to check out the style and brand you are interested in before deciding on which to purchase. There are 3 things you want to be aware of when choosing a baton.

The Defense Device's Grip

The first thing to check for is the end of the device you will be gripping with your hand. Well made batons will have a grip constructed of material that will make it difficult, if not impossible for an attacker or assailant to get the baton from you - while at the same time you allowing you the ability to exert a minimal amount of force on it with your hand in order to maintain control of it. It goes without saying that should you lose control of the baton due to slippage in your hand or someone getting it away from you it will make it useless to you.

The Defense Baton Itself

The next important thing to look for is the quality of the materials used in the baton. You want to make sure you have a thick enough gauge metal that it will be effective at subduing someone who needs to be stopped without it being an uncomfortably heavy weight to carry or swing. Uncomfortable can also apply to to "too light" as well. Believe it or not - there must be enough substance to land an effective blow when necessary.

Opening and Closing of the Device

Last, but most certainly, not least, is understanding that how the device opens and closes and knowing the difference between poor construction and good construction can make all the difference at the moment of truth, even if the first two items check out as good. The device should open easily yet not be able to close until you give it a sharp strike while holding the top of the handle against a sturdy object like a brick or a stone wall (not plaster or sheetrock- you'll likely make a dent or hole) or a solid floor. If you can close the device by pushing it in with your hand then that means it could also close if the person you are needing to subdue gets a hold of it as well and is in a position to close it. it only takes a moment for the tables to turn when using a device like this. Don't allow that moment to arise.

About Kubatons

Kubtons are small baton devices which measure less than 8 inches. They are made of sturdy metal and can come either flat or pointed. There are several ways they can be used. One way is that they can be applied to the wrist with the fingers to drive someone to the ground, or driven into someone's nose. This may sound strange but if someone has a kubaton in their nose (pointed works best) and upward pressure is applied, you will have control of them to be able to call for help or make an arrest.
