About Self Defense Batons

Batons are often thought of as weapons that are only used by law enforcement professionals. For many years this was true. Police officers carried them to deal with unruly criminals, and they were also extremely effective tools for crowd control purposes.

Intense Power
The reason law enforcement officials had these weapons and the general public did not was simply because they are so powerful. They may not look like much when collapsed, but as soon as the batons are snapped open they are a compelling sight that will strike fear into the person who is standing on the wrong end of the device. These weapons are available in 16, 21 or 26 inch sizes, and each one is capped off with a ball of solid steel at the top. Picture any time you've ever been hit with a stick or another long, lightweight item. When they are swung at you with any force at all, the length and thickness cause them to be extremely painful. Now try to imagine that same amount of energy used to hurl a stainless steel weapon at you. To put it simply, these things are designed to put down a criminal, and police officers all over the world rely on them to keep safe while on the job. And now you can own one as well, to protect you against an aggressor who might view you as an easy target.

Using Your Baton
An expandable baton is easy to open to its full length, all it takes is a quick flick of the wrist. Even so, it's a good idea to practice a few times when you first receive the weapon. You wouldn't want the first time you ever attempt to open the device to be when you are being confronted by a law breaker in a potentially life or death situation. Self defense experts often recommend carrying a baton in a holster, so that it is right by your side and easy to find during the heat of the moment. Many holsters come with an added benefit - a small hole in the bottom that allows you to carry the weapon at its fully expanded size. You should still learn how to open the weapon quickly, but when you carry it this way it will be ready for action at any time. Closing the baton is also easy, but it does take some force. To make sure the baton doesn't accidentally close while in use, each segment is made to be very sturdy and stay in place when fully expanded. Push the tip of the baton against a heavy surface like the sidewalk or a brick wall to get it to retract completely for compact transport.

Don't Settle For Poor Quality
Not all batons are made equally. When looking through the many options for baton related self defense weapons, make sure you choose one that is made out of sturdy metal that won't bend. Check the weight for the model you are interested in to make sure is isn't too heavy, but keep in mind that if it is too thin and lightweight it won't do you much good. Quality batons have a molded handle that is easy to grip and difficult to pull out of your hand. This is ideal to make sure a criminal can't take your weapon away from you.

Other Options
Some people may not want to carry a full sized baton, or have a weapon that is prominently displayed. For those who are looking for a small but efficient alternative, we have kubatons and leather slappers. The kubaton is a 5 1/2 inch sized baton that is used for situations in which an assailant is up close or has you in their grip. Hit the person on the wrist, in the face or another vulnerable area, and they will let go. Leather slappers serve a similar purpose. They are weighted to give the weapon a powerful punch that will you to inflict enough pain to get away from any assailant. Turn to any weapon in the baton family when you are looking for a way to stay safe when accosted by a criminal.
