Kubatons
Kubotans are not extendable batons: much of their power is in their compact size. Unlike retractable batons, kubotans are used for self defense in hand-to-hand situations where your opponent's closeness is unavoidable. Telescopic batons are more useful for people whose lifestyle makes it less likely that they will be attacked in the first place: the extendable feature enables them to intimidate and parry their adversaries, giving them a greater chance for escape. These smaller personal defense batons are handy for personal protection in situations where an expandable baton may not be practical: dates or parties, situations in which you'll be wearing evening clothes and need something less obvious, or when you expect trouble and want a small, practical weapon that can still provide you with safety and security. The power of these personal defense batons lies in their small size: rather than being used primarily to ward off or inflict blows, kubotans are used to apply direct and painful pressure to an opponent's body. They can be used to break knuckles or wrists, so in a situations where you've been grabbed, you can make your attacker let go with minimal exertion on your part. You can choose a kubotan with a pointed end or a flat end.
The other major tactical advantage of these lie in the fact that they are small enough to be attached to a key chain. As self defense instructors will tell you, a set of keys can make a powerful weapon in itself, particularly when swung towards an opponent's face. The kubotan can be used to punch or jab at an attacker, or you can hold the kubotan, using it to swing a large bunch of keys. Attach the baton to a set of old keys you don't use. If you don't have any, you can obtain them at junk shops. The idea is that, once you make contact, you have a chance to flee: you don't want your attacker to have your house keys!
